Time-Lapse and its usefulness
Reviewing and reporting progress is an important requirement for the project team including its stakeholders. Having an easy method to oversee this progress from several vantage points is priceless. A well considered time-lapse capture strategy (how many images per minute/hour/day and camera locations) can enable time-lapse photography to provide the project team with a quick and valuable reporting tool.
How can time-lapse help?
- Progress on any day can be checked (subject to access control) through the live portal and images can be reviewed from desired time periods.
- The rate of Construction can be assessed and areas of delay can be easily identified (compared to the Construction Schedule/Program).
- An edited video or captured images can help overcome the challenges of describing progress (or perceived lack thereof) to the Stakeholders.
Monitor Site/Location
Time-lapse provides the project team and key stakeholders with an easy tool to monitor the project site remotely.
Even after the project has been completed, say traffic on a bridge can be monitor and any mishaps (evidence) captured on video;
How can this benefit the project?
- Provides the project team with a tool to monitor governance and adherence to processes and procedures.
- Provides the construction teams with footage of their work area, which can be monitored from the site offices.
- For remote sites allows monitoring of weather conditions to assist site access decisions.
- Provides the client with a way to view the site remotely.
- Provides the safety team a way to monitor OH&S compliance.
- Provides key stakeholders with a way to review adherence to agreements regarding, say night works conditions.
The challenge was progress and proof that the contractor was employing the proper resources and complying with H&S dictates.
Multiple shifts including night shifts and issues of progress during such times:
The solution was to employ – as stipulated in the contract a visual recording and archiving system that facilitated live and recorded – time-lapsed intervals images that are then joined and results in a video, that could be pulled up at at time later for specific period – times and days, that can be reviewed and use for progress reports or any reports requiring visuals of the Works.
Over time progress improved; Health & Safety violations decreased; Penalties decreased; Stakeholders expressed appreciation for visual access and the Contractor appreciated the consequential reduction in penalties but felt pressured to increase productivity and improve H&S as “all eyes were on him.”
